Starlings at Sunset

A few nights ago as Arlo and I drove home from work we noticed these birds on the horizon in Nelson. They were swirling around the trees together at sunset. Their beautiful silhouettes captured us both. So last night we headed down to the beach with the camera, in the hope that they would still be there and they were! Apparently they are starlings and have been here for the past few days. I’m not sure what they are up to but if you’re in Nelson, head down to Rocks Road! It really is breathtaking.xobec

Looking for inspiration in nature. Taking snaps of the forgotten and unnoticed. This is my favourite way to feel refreshed and inspired for more art. Here are few snaps from our Easter weekend in the Marlborough Sounds.
How do you get inspired? Any tips?xobec

New Zealand Photography: Kowhai

Thought you would all like to to see this beautiful tree native to New Zealand. Its called a kowhai which is the Maori word for…yellow! I thought it was cool that the flowers were once used as a yellow dye- maybe something to test out one day! Which is your favourite image? xo Bec

Sea Urchin Art print

This art print was inspired by a photo I took at the beach a few weeks ago of a sea urchin who’s Maori name is Kina. I loooove its natural patterns and simplicity. I have never tried one of them so thats on my list of seafoods to test out! You can read a bit more about them and see an image of the inside here.  xo Bec

New Zealand Photography: Shags

These guys were having a bit of a secretly gathering on the beach so Arlo and I had to creep along the rocks very quietly in order to get some snaps! There was one little guy who we thought may be on lookout because as soon as we approached, he flapped at full speed down to the group and told on us! :) I love all their different stances silhouettes against the water. These are actually the birds I was photographing when we discovered this seal! xo Bec

New Zealand Photography: Sunbathing seal

If none of my other New Zealand Photography posts have made you want to travel here, Im sure this post will. While photographing some birds at the beach, I heard a loud gruff noise (hard to explain in words) and spun round to find this beautiful seal behind me! My heart raced as I sped down the beach to get a closer look. Arlo and I then spent well over an hour creeping closer and watching him until my camera battery died (I had taken over 150 photos at this stage!) It was just so beautiful and Arlo and I left the beach feeling even more love for this perfect country. Which is your favourite pic of him? xo Bec

A day by the wharf.

Yesterday Arlo and I had a day off from work together so went for an adventure and lunch at this wharf. It was perrrfect! I had the best seafood chowder in the world and captured some beautiful nature shots. I love the blue winter sky in these shots below! Have a lovely weekend friends! xo Bec
